Hi

When is one supposed to get their OW crew pack?
Before or after qualifying?

Regards

Alistair
before. How else are you supposed to read text and complete knowledge reviews and then do required 4 quizzes and final exam? If you do elearning THEN no need for crew pack, just log book and perhaps dive planner.

You get it before your class.

However, it also depends on what Crew Pack and how the course is structured. I will assume you are discussing PADI.

If you are having classroom sessions, you are to read and complete the Knowledge Reviews in the OW Manual before the classroom sessions. Some Crew Packs include a DVD to review before the classroom sessions.

If you are doing eLearning, you do not have to have the Crew Pack until you do your Confined Water dives.

Depending on how the course is structured and how the individual dive centre purchases the Crew Packs, the Crew Pack can include:

OW Manual
Log Book
DVD
Student Folder
SMB
Whistle
How to Chose and Use Dive Computers
RPD and Instruction Manual

At our Shop, students have to pick up and pay for their Crew Pack a minimum of one week prior to the Class and Pool sessions. Our Crew Packs include the OW Manual, Log Book, Student Folder, SMB, and Whistle.

Please realize that my comments are based on what PADI Canada offers/provides.

Hi All

Thanks for the replys.

The course my son is doing includes the PADI OW crew pack but he has not received it and he is writing his exam tomorrow night.

I think we picked a winner of a "dive school". We have had nothing but confussion since joining them.

They are closed today so I will follow up with them tomorrow.

We are changing schools after this.

Thanks

Alistair

Alistair, here is some more information just so you go prepared.

To complete the Knowledge Development portion of the Open Water Diver class, he must read the Manual, watch five videos that correspond to the chapters, and complete the following:

Knowledge Reviews 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Quizzes 1, 2, 3, and 4 - 10 multiple choice questions each.
Final Exam - includes 1 - 4 as well as 5. 50 multiple choice questions each.

The KR's are to be reviewed in turn with your son and the Instructor. After each KR is reviewed, he completes the corresponding Quiz, not before.

The Final Exam covers everything.

To do otherwise is a violation of the "Standards" the Instructor is to follow. If he takes shortcuts here, where else may he take shortcuts?

Hawkwood +1 - with PADI at least. Saying that the format for other agencies should be virtually identical, with a few variations on how many KR's there are, and maybe without the quizzes.

Its appalling that dive centres can get away with this, and I agree with DiversSupplyPDC - you must report this to the training agency. Has your son done any of his waterwork yet? I would highly recommend taking a referral for the academics and completing the confined and open water sessions with a more professional school. Who know's what corners this dive centre is willing to cut out at sea!
