My wife and I recently took our first trip to Cozumel December 18th - 25th. We absolutely loved it and cant wait to go back! We dove with Blue XT Sea and I must say that is the best dive operation I have ever dove with. Between the jackets, towels and fresh baked muffins between dive we felt spoiled! The Divemasters with Blue XT Sea were some of the best I have seen. Thanks Christi! Everybody we meet on the island was nice and the diving was spectacular. The only thing we had a problem with was a diver with us that was inconsiderate to the sea life. Watching him kick the coral and drop a rock on ray to see it move.
We stayed and Casa Mexicana. This is a very nice hotel right in the middle of downtown. The rooms were clean, service was great, finding a place to eat was easy and the dive boat picked us up one block away on a pier. The ocean view rooms give you a nice view of the cruise ships coming in. The only problem was there was no beach right off the hotel. We knew this before we booked but thought we would try it, usually we stay at resorts.
Our first day we were suppose to dive (Dec. 19) the port was closed because of the Norte. This is when we missed the beach on the hotel the most. We needed to find something to do for the day. Usually we would lay on the beach read a book and have some drinks. So we ended up walking around downtown Cozumel and all it's shops.
The second day we received a call that the port was closed to small boats again. The winds were not as bad this day so we thought we would try and shore dive, but that did not happen. No shore diving aloud either. Then about 11am we get a call from Christi saying the winds have died down and she can get us on a cattle boat that can get out. Of course we say yes and get in a taxi to go where we need to. Being on the bigger boat was not that bad, but that could be only because we were so excited to get in the water. The Divemaster from Blue XT Sea was on the larger boat with us and dove with us. We did 2 dives, one reef and one wall that first day.
The third day the port was open! So we ended up doing 4 dives that day (to try to make up some of the diving we had missed). Two morning dives, one afternoon dive and one night dive. The port was open the rest of our tip so we were diving everyday after that. The amount of sea life was awesome. I don't even remember the count of spotted eagle rays or turtles we saw. I am typing this at work so I don't have the list of dive sites we went to. But in 12 dives we did a different spot each time including a ship wreck that is there.
On our last day there we headed to the main land. We tried to set up getting to Chichen Itza or Tulum through the hotel, but it was expensive and about a 14 hour day for there tours (over a hundred and fifty US dollars a person). Then Christi recommended to us to take the ferry (which was walking distance from from the hotel) and the bus station was only a four block walk when we arrived in Playa del Carmen. So we headed to Tulum for the day. Using there ferry and the buses was easier then we expected and cost us about $25 a person to get from Cozumel to Tulum.
We had a great time and our already planning to go back this year and dive with Blue XT Sea again. :scubadive
