Has anyone lately heard of any orca (killer whale) sighting in the tropics lately? I have heard that they have been known to appear off Paupa New Guinea/Solomon Islands or Honduras. I would appreciate any info.

Thanks,

There have been three or four sightings (the last was in October 2004) around Layang Layang, a Malaysian-occupied atoll at the edge of the Spratley archipelago. See “Sighting of killer whale” by Adrian Lim at http://www.layanglayang.com/press.asp

Nat Sumanatemeya, a Thai photographer, have seen orcas near Ko Ba-Ngu (Island 9), Similan Islands Marine National Park, Thailand, within the past three or four years (I can’t remember when exactly).

Just saw those orca pics on that website. Some really nice shots.

Yes-we saw an orca in Fiji while diving with Dan Grenier in the northern Lau Isles of Vanua Mbulava at one of the entrances(the Tongan entrance?) to the large coral atoll there in 1995.
