Exercising and keeping fit is good for scuba diving.

On the other hand, « strenuous » exercise appears to be a risk factor for DCS.

If someone practices jogging 30 minutes every day, and scuba dives every day, is there any scientific evidence to establish the ideal interval between jogging and diving ?

Is it better to jog, then dive, or the other way around ?

Jog, then dive.

This. What you don't want to do is exercise "immediately" following a dive. So exercise, then dive. Ya know, after the wheezing and hacking has stopped.

Here's what the PADI Deep manual says, p.47:

"Furthermore, DCS may become more likely based on these factors:
• Heavy exertion immediately before, during or after a deep dive. Exertion before or after the dive can promote micro bubbles that grow as excess nitrogen dissolves into them. Exertion during the dive speeds up the circulation, accumulating more nitrogen than normal."

Dr. Steve Thom (formerly of UPenn and now of U of Maryland) has done a lot of research on pre-dive exercise.

This one from 2014 found a reduction in neutrophil (a type of white blood cell) activation but an increase in circulating venous gas emboli at 40 and 80 minutes in dives that follow exercise vs control:
Exercise before scuba diving ameliorates decompression-induced neutrophil activation. - PubMed - NCBI

This one from 2014 found a significant reduction in VGE 15 minutes post-dive in dives that were preceded by exercise vs control:
High intensity cycling before SCUBA diving reduces post-decompression microparticle production and neutrophil activation. - PubMed - NCBI

This one from 2016 looked at dives after vigorous exercise vs control and found no difference in VGE or microparticles between the two.
The impact of predive exercise on repetitive SCUBA diving. - PubMed - NCBI

A caveat on microparticles: it's been theorized that microparticles can act as bubble nuclei, but definitions of microparticles vary and their role in the formation of VGE and development of DCS is still under investigation.

I think that it's reasonable to conclude that jogging prior to diving is probably safe, especially if you're a regular jogger. There are no evidence-based guidelines on intervals between exercise and diving.

Also,

Snog, then Log....

I had read somewhere that exercise the day before diving actually reduced the incidents of DCS but I can't put my finger on the book or article. As far as after diving. No, just relax.

Thank you very much !

Most appreciated.
