Does anyone here know if that large ceiba (kapok) tree that's on the road about halfway across the island on the southern part of the loop around the island survived the storm? I hope it made it; it's the site of a sort of annual pilgrimage for my family. It survived Gilbert, but the winds were from a different quarter this time.
Many years ago, my mom and dad were stopped there looking at it, and my mom was wondering what kind of tree it is. A Mexican couple on a "moped" stopped there, too, and my mom tried to ask them, and after a lengthy exchange in their bad English and her atrocious Spanish, the guy looks at my mom and says very loud and slow, "TREE, lady".
