The minimum focal distance for the Oly C-4040 is 8". If I can't get a macro shot in focus, it's usuall because I've misjudged the distance. There is a technique that allows you to significantly cut that focal distance. When zoomed all the way out, tap the zoom lever 4 times. You may have to move your camera in and out just a tad but you'll cut that focal distance to about 2.5"!
