In a couple of years I am planning on retiring my present career. Since I love Scuba and I like to teach I was thinking of becoming a dive instuctor.

Has anyone else ever did this or thought about being a dive instructor in their retired years? Any input would be appreciated.

I have always thought it would be a great idea and am tentatively planning on it...although I have a couple more years than you to go...

half of my forties in hopefully will soon be a scuba instructor. As mentioned in an earlier post teaching scuba is part of my retirement plan.

I have 3 year and 4 months left in the Navy, and will be a Dive Instructor.... (I hope within the next two years) and plan on doing it full time when I am done. The LDS I deal with has 3 boats, 2 here in Virginia Beach and 1 down in Miami Beach... :D so I plan to work them all and :partyon:

Rich :mean:

Sounds like a good idea to me. Just give me a few more years to get to the retirement age. It would be fun to be able to go to the warm water environment during the cold winters here in Vermont, as you must know. Then let me come back to spend the summers here!:) :

Hey stump jumper where in Vermont are you located? I'm down here in Bennington.

Hey Just remeber the hours are long and the pay sucks !!!

But you get to see some top spots, if you are willing to pack a bag and go where the work is.
It is a great life for a few years, but I dont know any instructors that actually save any money while teaching full time.

I have a couple of pals who figure they will weather the recession by teaching diving at resorts or on cruise ships. They know that the pay is tragically low, but they figure that, with wages falling & thier investments gone south here in the states, why not sign up for a couple years of fun & adventure that they sure can't afford to pay for? If I did not still have student loans, I would be on the next boat out of here, too!
