i just attended a Metrowest Dive Club Event with speaker Richie Kohler talking about his experiences Diving the Britannic near Greece, and his new book, The Mystery of the Last Olympian, a fun read, that is certainly adding pages to the history of diving.

Do you know what the white balloons tied to the valves are for? Old School SMB maybe?
 
The white balls appear to be aluminum buoyancy floats used in commercial fishing.
They are produced in a variety of sizes and colors
It is suggested that you visit your local ships chandlery where you can view up close and personal
