Hi

Old time diver ( certified in 1991 ) here with a couple of questions.

Looking to get back into diving after a 10 hiatus. Dug out my old US Diver Conshelf ( which I purchased in 1991 ) regulator and saw that green mould had grown on it. Is it still safe to use? I live in Toronto and the dive shop I went to to have it serviced said my regulator is so old they don't have to parts to service it anymore. Anyone know where in Toronto I can get my regulator serviced?

Thanks!

Madcat

The dive shop wanted to sell you a new reg. Service kits are still available and service is not difficult.

If the reg was green it may have a corrosion problem. Pictures would help.

I'm an old diver too; I'm still using the second stage from a U.S. Divers Calypso IV regulator that I bought in 1975....my regular dive shop is able to service it every two years when I take my other stuff in.

'91, it's barely worn in.

Bob

occasionally still dives his 1963 Nemrod double hose.

'91? That's still younger than me, you're good. While I'm not that old, I regularly dive with regs that are older than I am, earliest one I regularly use is an old Cyklon from the 60's.

Reg is still fine, just needs a hot date with the ultrasonic and a new parts kit. You can find them and do it yourself, or take it to a good shop. Try Dan's Dive Shop, Matt et al. may be able to help you.

Your dive shop is BSing you, Conshelf kits are still available from Aqualung and even if "official" kits weren't, all the internal parts are still the exact same as the current models. Now, one possible issue, if you have the plastic second stages, on some of them the housing and the port plug are prone to cracking, those parts are not available so that second stage is not repairable if it's cracked. That said, there is no reason what so ever you can't replace the second stage with either a new model or find a metal one on ebay, have it serviced and keep diving the reg. The Conshelf first stage is about as good as first stages get.
The green is salt induced corrosion, unless it's really bad it can be easily cleaned off the reg put back in service. The reg might not look pretty with bare brass showing but it fill function fine.

seen/serviced worse.

There are apparently two Aqualung (new/old name for US Divers) dealers in/near Toronto:
AQUARIUS SCUBA
4020 Dundas Street W
Toronto
- and -
REC & TEK SCUBA INC.
529 Upper Sherman Ave
Hamilton

If it’s one of those who said your reg couldn’t be serviced, go to the other one.

Check under the hose boots for corrosion also. Or the shop will...
