A friend gave me this Nikonos camera about 10 years ago and it has sat in storage all this time. I asked my local dive shop about taking a photo class and if they could go through this camera and make sure it was okay. They told me that they do not work on them and pretty much the photo world has gone digital. When I inquired the price for a digital set up I decided against it, but wondered if anyone can give me some direction as to what I should do with this old Nikonos IV. I guess if I want digital pics I can go someplace and get them made into a cd. I'd like to use this camera but obviously don't know what it takes to service and inspect it. I haven't even figured the way to put film in it yet. Is there any way I can get a owners manual, information on how to use it or a place that would be able to help me out.....or is it really a dinosaur and don't mess with it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the link, I'll check into it.

Sub Aquatic Camera is also a good option.

Help on using it... my best advice is to contact an UWPhoto Instructor.
If you were in Brazil, I would be glad to have you as a student!:D

The setup in the photo looks useless. You will need either extension tubes for macro OR a wide angle lens. The Nikonos is an amazing system (I still use it) but one reason so many people felt they got burned was that they were only using a 35mm lens. On its own that lens is roughly the equivalent of a paperweight.

1. Decide if you want to shoot wide angle or macro. If you want wide angle, go to eBay and get a 15 or 20mm lens. The 20 can often be found under $300. Then have the camera and lens serviced. It should cost roughly $100 to replace the o-rings and check everything. I use Underwater PhotoTech in NH. 603-432-1997. Southern Niknos and Sub-Aquatic are also very good.

2. If you want to do macro, sell the Nikonos IV on eBay and get a digicam. Come to think of it, if you want to do wide angle, sell the Nikonos IV and get a V. I got mine for about $200.

Kinda off topic but I noticed that these are all over ebay these days. I was researching these and the Nikonos V, plus the lenses, and found the ebay listings interesting.

Also, Google "Nikonos IV" for other resources.

Sea ya!

Nevermind... I don't need any help with my camera... got it all figured out. Thanks

Hi,

I am a Nikon user as well. Do not know about your particular model, I owned some other models but some of my 35mm cameras I used are backward compactable with the old lens, as well as the new lens, e.g. My F-100 can use back all of my old manual lens 105mm, 24mm etc.

It seems to me that some people here are using Nikonos IV-A:

In general, if you want to do macro, you can use an extension tube and a SB-101 strobe. You can check with other experts...
Check out the Nikonos section: http://www.seafriends.org.nz/phgraph/macro.htm

I have a manual in pdf format if you are interested...as well as a service manual...
