I just bought a pair of used weight pockets that have no markings or brand logo. They are approx. 4" by 6" and have an orange toggle on the pocket flap. They also have a zipper on the top for easy weight loading, and the pocket opens towards the bottom, with the flap secured by velcro only. From reading through a few threads on SB, I would guess that these are the old DR weight pockets (the model preceding the current TransWeight systems). Does that sound right?

Question for those of you that have used the old design - have you had problems with weights accidentally dumping? How secure is this bottom-facing design with just the velcro holding up the flap of the pocket? Has anyone tried to modify them to make them more secure and how (for example, by adding a delrin quick-release to secure the flap)?

Thanks, Zimpod

those are the old DR weight pockets...if you have two horizontal and one vertical loop on the back of each one, that would be double confirmation...

I use them and love them. Never had a problem with them dumping, but Velcro doesn't hold fast forever, so I would not be surprised if I eventually do...but so far they are fine...but I do only use between 5# and 8# in each one...I never get near the stated 16# max...

The newer DR 16# pockets are larger and bulkier and only have the two horizontal loops on the back (I have a brand new pair and will likely sell them)...I like the older ones much better...

Never tried to modify them...

Your model sounds right zimpod although Sea Elite had identical looking weight pockets also - but they're not on the Divers Supply web site any more.

I have had one and only one failure of such a weight pocket - I have convinced myself to never let the boat crew fiddle with my gear again - doing so is likely to decrease tip amounts once they'be been asked not to. It was a backroll entry at Klein Bonaire and I couldn't submerge - gee, because the weight came out when I was inverted in the backroll.

Thanks, guys. Looking at the back of the pocket, I see the 2 horizontal and 1 vertical loop, so they must be Dive Rite.

Unfortunately, I just tried them out on my harness and there is not enough space - must be my thin girlish figure...uh.. or perhaps its the Halcyon pocket that I wear, either way I think I would need to go with a smaller footprint pocket, perhaps those XS Scuba 5 lbs pockets. I think I am going to put them up for sale in the Classified Section ($30) or trade them for the XS Scuba pockets.

Thank you both for your help.

Well, just to let you know...the XS Scuba pocket will occupy 5" of your waist webbing, as the thread-through portion of the unit extends slightly beyond the actual pocket itself--this is one reason why they are so solid and stable. The old-style DR pocket will actually only occupy ~4" (maybe 4.5") of actual webbing space--but the pocket itself is ~6" wide. Unless you really stuff the DR pocket, it can easily be squeezed into a ~4" wide space. Just a footnote to the above discussion.
