These critters are so clever and amazing. Today we saw one at Bare Island that looked just like a cuttlefish. It fooled both of us at first. Then I watched it dig itself deeper into the sand and change colour to look like a sole or semi burried flathead. It just had its eyes and a tiny bit of the bell visible.
I have seen them hold bits of broken glass and even the lid from a take away drink in front of their holes so they could be protected while they watched the world go by.
I found one deeply burried in the sand inside a large mouthed jar. I only found that one because of the jet of water comming out of the sand!
I had one approach my camera very carefully and reach out its tentacles and stroke and feel the camera.
We've heard of the Mimic Octopus but I am wondering if this is a trick that many of them use. What kinds of things are others seeing them do?

last dive at bare island we were going past the dumb bell and it moved... an occy had attached itself to it and was mimicing the shape so expertly it just looked a little bigger than usual, it was even circular like the dumb bell is and perfect rust impression and colour

sneeky buggers arent they!
