Dear ocean fans,
I belong to a team of over hundred scientists all around Europe of the EU funded MicroB3 project, and we are working on organizing a worldwide sampling event called the Ocean Sampling Day (OSD).
The Ocean Sampling Day is a simultaneous sampling campaign of the worlds oceans and will take place on the summer solstice (June 21st) in the year 2014. These cumulative samples, related in time, space and environmental parameters, will provide insights into fundamental rules describing microbial diversity and function and will contribute to marine ecology but also to the blue economy through the identification of novel, ocean-derived biotechnologies. We expect that these data will provide a reference data set for generations of experiments to follow in the coming decade. It could also function as starting point for regularly coordinated future OSDs. We would like to make science more transparent to the public, get everybody involved and show that they can contribute as well. Everyone who is interested can measure environmental parameters like water temperatures, nutrients or water turbidity. The data can then be uploaded via internet or a special Smartphone App. If we manage to get many people around the world involved we would get a unbelievable dataset which will be of course open access for everyone. Visit www.my-osd.org for more information.
But unfortunately we still lacking some funding for sequencing and therefore we started a crowd funding campaign.
www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-ocean-sampling-day With this we try to raise some money for the science part but also to finance a documentary about the OSD and the role of microorganism in our oceans.
It would be great if you guys could help us by joining the OSD on the 21th of June 2014, donate some dollars or spread the word, tell people about it, post it on facebook or twitter #OSD2014
Let us work together for a better understanding of our oceans!
Thank you!
Julia
