Hi All,

What is the difference between materials that different o-rings are made of? I am particularly interested in Aquatica and Sea & Sea as I currently use these two brands.

The S&S o-rings that I have used are made from Silicone rubber. That means you shouldn't use silicone grease for them but rather fluorosilicone or Tribo/Christo lube greases. I believe that Aquatica uses Buna-n (nitrile) o-rings (they are the black ones) and they sell a silicone grease for them. To make your life simple, just buy some Tribolube71 or Christolube MCG111 and use it on all your o-rings with no worry in the future.

I just ordered Tribolube 71 and will start testing this weekend. I'll post the results after a month with a comparison to previous products that I have used. Thanks for the info!

I have serviced so many other peoples housings privately, that have enough grease in the grooves and slopped around the O ring to launch a ship.

Also containing the prerequisite amounts of hair, fluff, grits and other attachables.

I replace all my O rings, from Nikonos I to current acrylic housings
with soft compound nitrile or EPDM and use only enough grease,
on only the O ring, to prevent binding upon closure.

Tribolube is a very good idea.

Am servicing one YS-110a strobe with Sea & Sea lubricant and one with Tribolube 71. Have made four excursions so far. Sea & Sea lubricant is thicker and stickier than Tribolube 71. Seems to be no difference in sand buildup. Sea & Sea lubricated o-ring looks wetter upon removal of the battery cap. Seems to form a thicker layer due to viscosity.

Bill,

Are these still good recommendations, especially for the Aquatica O-rings ? I've heard someone else mention the Christolube MCG111 or or whoever manufacturers the "111" lube. Dow perhaps ? Thanks in advance for confirming. :)

The perfluoroether materials (Tribolube and Christolube) are good for all o-rings including Aquatica. I am quite sure that neither makes the raw materials but they combine them to make the lube. They are both good products, I use the Tribolube 71 for all my o-rings.
