Been flying to Bonaire on points for many years - until now. Last year on United it was 35k, now its 80k!!! That was a bit of a shock. Ended up paying the $800 EWR-BON as the other parts were already set. Not sure what we'll do in 2019 though.

Flights to Bonaire have been problematic for me this year too. Unfortunately, our dates weren't flexible and our tickets from EWR were around 1K each! Luckily we had air miles stashed away.

I didn't know about that move by United. That's too bad--I was considering getting the card with next year in mind, but it hardly seems worth it now...

The card probably still pays with the free bag each, couple of united club passes and group 2 boarding... But it really paid when I could not even bother looking at the price and just go for the award travel! Seriously, 160k for 2 in coach??? Geez!

Wow! $1k NYC to Bonaire! I'm paying less RT to Russia!

Actually, its 40k (per leg) nearly everywhere now. A $8K business class trip to Japan will not even earn you a round trip economy ticket anymore.

320k points for a family of 4....and I "only" have 300k points.

I think you have to start looking at the actual cost vs the point cost and only use point on the most expensive economy trips now.

What dates are you looking at?

Also this is why most people suggest accumulating points in a transferable currency such as Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Citi ThankYou Points, etc. Maybe you are a United Frequent Flier for business so that is why you have that stash. But with flexible points you can transfer to various airlines within different alliances to maximize your odds of finding flights. I was just in the United website so I took a quick peak and I saw 40k flights during the month of April and May, not sure of your dates. I was having issues clicking on the dates so wondering if they are phantom or not but you can always call to inquire.

The yearly fee on the United card is not awful because you get the free checked bag and 2 club passes, but there are other ways to get those perks too, all depends on how often you fly United specifically vs how often you fly in general and are not tied to a specific airline. With how programs are going these days (devalue) chasing status on an airline is having diminishing returns in my opinion.

I've booked a lot of trips on miles and points all over the world, feel free to ask for advice!

I'm afraid the vast majority of my points comes from credit card use. So no way I am going to accumulate the points to cover 40k each way per person! I always do check $$$ vs points, but now it will likely effect my choice of dive spots...

Well I will certainly have to re-evaluate my rewards options now for sure! This came as a surprise to me this week. I don't fly at all for work anymore so no mileage there. I just passed on using points to fly to Colorado as I assumed I would need them for Bonaire... Oops ;) Looks like domestic flights might be the only use from now on... Thanks for feedback.

Can always by a $220.00 RT to Cancun and do a drift dive to Bonaire :)
