Planning to be in Australia in May (Gold Coast area - husband there for business) and want to follow up with diving. I was originally looking at GBR liveaboards awhile ago but all the ones I was interested in were either booked, down for annual maintenance (which tells me maybe this isn't the best time to do it?), or had schedules that didn't work out for us as we are pretty restricted on the dates. I was looking at non-cattle options such as Mike Ball, Spirit of Freedom, Nimrod.

So we were planning to do a liveaboard in Fiji instead. But that may not work out and I'm back to looking at land based things in Australia - perhaps places such as Hayman, Lizard, Hamilton, Heron Islands. I read things that say there's good diving possible from day ops in some of these places, and I read other things that say if you don't do a liveaboard don't bother. I'm not sure what to believe. Anyone have thoughts on this? Recommendations?

(And, any Gold Coast must-dos? I'll probably have a car, but I've never driven on the left so we'll see how that goes.)

I'd suggest heading further North. There is plenty of good diving around Queensland, I myself though have not done much in the Gold Coast. Liveaboard would be the best option, but if you cant get that then maybe one of the islands. I myself will be taking a trip to Heron in June. Its going to be a bit colder than I am used to but the vis is supposed to pick up a lot :)
