Can anyone comment on Nomad Divers' operation in Costa Maya?

We will be there in mid January 2010 and I'm about to pull the trigger on booking with them. Any information about their operation would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey there!

I am currently living in Mahahual and I'm working as an instructor at a different shop - to be honest, I've never heard of Nomad divers(and this is a small town - mind ya, I've only lived and worked here for 2 months now).... are they a resort shop?

I can ask at work tomorrow for you to find out more info on them if you'd like?

Let me know.
Kimberlie

Thanks for the response Kimberlie. They seem to be an independent operator as far as I can tell. Selma Nijman has handled our arrangments. She has been very personable and accommodating, and a real pleasure to deal with so far. Here is their website: Scuba Dive Costa Maya diving Nomad Divers Mahahual Mexico Diving Costa Maya dive Mahahual.

Let me know what you find out and thanks again.

I have known and dove with Selma since meeting her at Dreamtime Dive in 2008. Selma works hard to make your diving experience enjoyable and memorable. She knows the sites, has a great rapport with Captain Mario (one of my two favorite captains in the area) and will do her best to make sure you enjoy your time diving the reefs between Majahual and Xcalak.

After diving with her in 2008, I returned to dive with her for 10 days in 2009 (she helped us find a house for our group). We logged over 30 hours of bottom time on that trip and since we can't get enough of the diving in the area, we plan on spending another 10 days diving with her in July of this year.

Since my wife and I own a time share near Puerto Morelos, we have spent many hours under the water in Puerto Morelos, Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel, Akumal, and Puerto Aventuras. From all the shops and independents we have dove with since 2002, Selma has by far been the best guide we have had.

Give her the opportunity to show you how beautiful the diving is and I don't think you'll be disappointed!

I am a PADI instructor and have dove with Selma for the last 2 years. As an instructor, when I am not teaching, I have picked up the habit of watching how other instructors interact with students, and other divers, both in, and out of the water.
I have only praise for Selma, I would dive with her anyplace, any time.

She believes in diving a conservative profile, and in Mahahaual there is no need to always dive deep. The sea life between 40 and 80 feet is fantastic.
She is always monitoring her divers for any unusual behavior and has them check their air supply often as the dive progresses.
She has great eyes and is able to find all types of critters in the reef.
She takes things slow and easy, all of my dives with her have been between 50 and 63 minutes.

Well we're back from our Caribbean cruise and a day of diving in Costa Maya. Selma did a great job. Just as she indicated by her emails, she was very accommodating and had everything ready for our arrival in port. She met us outside the cruise port and escorted our taxi to a nearby hotel in Mahahual where she had our boat operator waiting. She loaded all the tanks on board and we set out for the quick 10 minute boat ride to the dive sites. She brought oxygen on board and gave a very good briefing before our first dive. My daughter had trouble clearing her ears and Selma very patiently and skillfully helped her work her way down for a nice dive. She handled both dives like a drift dive with the boat captain following our bubbles and picking us up without having to double back. Selma led the dives at a relaxed pace often pointing out various animals along the way, such as seven or eight lion fish. The reef in Costa Maya is marked by impressive structures. It has many canyons, cracks and swim throughs. We had a great time and would recommend Selma and Nomad divers to anyone planing to visit Costa Maya. She offers personalized service and a relaxed, but safe atmosphere. In fact she gave us a private boat for my family of four for just $25 extra.

I would strongly recommend Selma of Nomad Divers. We dove with her in February 2010 and found a completely relaxed yet professional atmosphere. She took care of everything; we literally just had to dive and enjoy. She pointed out interesting things to see in the water and treated my dive buddy, who's breakfast did not stay down, with such finesse that she was able to complete both dives and enjoy them even after getting sick. Our gear was rinsed after use, we got to sit with our toes in the sand and appreciate the beauty of Costa Maya, not to mention Selma's adorable dog Luna. Don't waste your time with more commercial dive companies; Selma will provide an excellent experience at a very fair price.

I have spent allot of time diving in Costa Maya and have never heard of Nomad. All of the dive operators or going to take a DAN oxygen kit along. Before you book I would check into to other dive operations in Mahahual as there are only a few and then decide.

Dear Divers,

First and foremost, let me thank my customers for their kind words and comments here on Scubaboard. I greatly enjoyed diving with you all, and I hope to dive with you again in the near future.

Now, for those who don't know me or Nomad Divers, let me introduce myself.

My name is Selma Nijman, and I AM Nomad Divers. I run a very small dive operation south of downtown Mahahual. If you don't know me or haven't been able to locate Nomad Divers, that's because Nomad Divers doesn't advertise on billboards. Nomad Divers' business thrives on repeat customers, word-of-mouth and personal recommendations.

Why Nomad Divers?

As the name suggests, [Quote from Webster’s dictionary, a Nomad is: “1 : a member of a people who have no fixed residence but move from place to place usually seasonally and within a well-defined territory
2 : an individual who roams about],
Nomad Divers’ realm hasn’t always been limited to the Mexican Caribbean Sea.

After years of roaming around the inner space of Fiji, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Palau and the Philippines to name a few, Nomad Divers’ territory nowadays is Mahahual, Mexico.

On November 27th 2009, Nomad Divers celebrated its 10 year anniversary of doing business in the Riviera Maya and Costa Maya, Mexico!

With customers’ convenience in mind, Nomad Divers continues to be nomadic within the Costa Maya area. On cruiseship days for example, our dive boat leaves from downtown Mahahual rather than further down the bumpy coastal road. For our cruiseship customers this means less time is lost traveling, and more time available for –you guessed it– diving!

For people that aren’t as pressed for time as our cruiseship customers, but do like the extra convenience, Nomad Divers will go the extra mile and pick up its divers right in front of their hotel (where reasonable and possible of course).

Nomad Divers is not for everybody, and cannot be found unless you are looking for serious diving, serious fun and serious safety. And yes, 3000dives, we do carry medicinal oxygen on the boat, unlike a few other dive operations in the Costa Maya.

Happy diving and warm regards,

Selma Nijman
