So I'm all stoked about my brand new G10 and WP DC28 housing, both of which just arrived yesterday. But how come there's no kind of protective cap or hood for the underwater housing? I just got off the phone with Canon, and the gentleman on the other-end confirmed there's no such thing for it or most of their underwater housings.

Two questions:

1) Why doesn't Canon make protective caps or coverings for its housing lens ports (the Canon associate had no real answer other than, essentially: "that's just the way it is")? My old Olympus housing for my 7070 came with a fitted cap, so why isn't there one for my much better Canon?

2) Any advice on how I can acquire a protective cap for the housing or put something together for it that will suffice? I called around, and the online camera stores such as Adorama don't have anything for it (the housing port has a rectangular shape, so a generic round cap won't work). I've got a Fantasea Red Filter that will fit over it, but I suspect that it instead of the port will get scratched if I try to use it as a cap hood.

Thanks in advance for any advice

I'm guessing that you want to protect against scratches, right? Throw a ring of Velcro around the lens port and either cut or sew together a small little "bag" and attach it that way.

Not exactly the most appealing to the eye but if you already have Velcro for your strobe mask it couldn't be much worse, right?

Some bungee and a coffee can lid would probably do the job, too.

I've never had a cover on any of housings, though, and it's never been a problem.

I have noticed that Olympus supplied housings are a cut above the goofy looking Canons with equally goofy colored buttons.

The lens port is slightly recessed, I doubt you scratch it without trying.

Find a plastic lid big enough to cover it and use a bit of bungee cord to hold it on.
