Here I am, a newbie diver in Louisiana, 40 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The coastal waters here are too turbid for diving, so platform dives 50 miles out are the only option. (Please correct me, if I'm wrong about that.) I don't have boat suitable for offshore platform dives, and there are no walk-on dive boats around.
So I am now wondering, if a local dive club were in existence, could we connect other divers like me with owners of suitable dive boats who would like to make some platform dive trips? Are the more experienced divers in our area interested in connecting with new divers to share dive trips, experiences, knowledge and a beer or two?
I would love to make connections with more experienced divers in person on a regular basis. I have so many questions!. Just hanging around the dive shop, waiting for someone to come in doesn't seem like an efficient use of time. We don't have an lds right now, anyway.
If I were to attempt to make an informal meeting if dive enthusiasts, I think I would probably meet with some success with new divers. But the key is to have experienced divers involved, as well. Is that realistic around here?
This whole new world of SCUBA is just too fascinating for me to just sit by most of the year, and get wet once every month or two. Are there others out there who want to get more involved, too?
I'd love to get feedback on this from both locals and non-locals who might have some insight into getting a dive group going, whether it's some kind of official organization, or just people getting together informally every now and then.
Please let me hear your opinions.
