So my daughter and I have been wanting to get our nitrox certifications for a while now.

My LDS (Pacific Wilderness) wants $225 for the course (no dives) including the book/dvd/tables and instruction.

Sport Chalet's website says $75 tuition with a $20 Padi fee - does this not include the books which would be extra?

PADI on line is $195 plus whatever my LDS will charge me to do the 'predive simulations'.

I know the $100 online BS courses are no good, what is the reality of what it will cost and where I should get it done?!?!?!

If I do have to buy the books/dvd separate from Sport Chalet, could my daughter and I share one set of documents and pay the tuition and padi fees?

Thanks all!!

Call up Sport Chalet and ask if there are other fees for the nitrox course besides the $75 tuition and $20 PADI fee (for the PIC?).

You and your daughter should be able to share one book, so a few bucks can be saved there. My interpretation of the PADI "rules" with regard to book access is that each household can get by with one set of books. You and your daughter can just write out the answers to the Knowledge Reviews on a separate sheet of paper and submit it to your instructor.

Take the class wherever it's cheapest. Ask your instructor to show you how to properly calibrate and use an oxygen analyzer.

PADI nitrox classes don't require that students conduct any OW dives. You take the class, pass the test, and get your card for the magic gas. That's it.

There's really not a whole lot to learning to dive nitrox....learn how to calculate your MOD, NDL....breathe in, breathe out, repeat as necessary :D

I'd take the cheap online class, personally.

BTW, talk to Eddie at PW when asking for prices....don't talk to Jeff ;)

$225 sounds kind've high for that class. I charge $150 ... all student materials included ... and I include two (shore) dives. The dives aren't required ... I just don't see the point in teaching a diving class without taking my students diving ... and they always seem to like it.

The $75 class you mentioned will most likely not include books ... which they can charge you upwards of $100 for over and above the class fees ...

I think retail on the book kit is 89 dollars but I think Sport Chalet sell it for 55 dollars, technical you suppose to have separate books.

Wow!! My daughter and I got cert through SSI. The dive shop had a special. If you take the nitrox class with in 6 weeks of cert. it was only $50.00. Reg. price was only $100.00. Those prices included the books. That was only a year ago and in Florida.

I agree with Ligersandtions..talk to Eddie he is a great guy there and I got certified there and took several specialty classes there. +1 For Eddie for sure :)

I charge $200 for the Nitrox course. This includes the books, tuition and dives. All you need is your gear. The only extra cost is boat diving compared to shore diving.
