My wife and I are going to Ft. Lauderdale in a couple of months and we're interested in getting our Nitrox cards. I phoned two places. The dive shop I'm interested in diving with wants $225 per person (including dives) and another non-dive shop will do it for $99, but then we have to get two nitrox dives under our belts with someone else before we get our cards.

Am I trying too hard to save a couple of bucks, and in the long run asking for hassles?

Del, I think the usual PADI cost for the nitrox cert is about $150 and requires 2 dives.
If $225 is the cost of the class, 2 boat dives, and gas, it sounds like a decent deal.

The TDI course runs $100 and requires no dives.

We charge $130.00 and this includes everything required to complete the classroom work and open water dives at a local quarry. It does not cover boat fees if needed. So, if your boat dives are included, it's not too bad a deal.

My SSI Nitrox was $95 plus $30 materials (books, tables, ...) - no dives required. I think they pretty much follow the TDI course.

Same for me. $65.00 for the SSI nitrox, $30.00 for the books and dives are optional (at an additional charge).

Just for clarification...
Are you talking about getting Nitrox certified in Florida?

If so, one of the shops there in the Boca Raton area will allow you to do your study and maybe even test over the internet. I think it has "American" in it's name. In the past, I've used Force-E with great satisfaction for both training and gear. They have nice service with their dive charters as well.

Here, I found the link for American:
http://www.americandivecenter.com/tdi_tech/tek_n2o2_door.htm

And this is Force E:

I did my nitrox with a padi center. The cost were as follows.
$120.00 course
$17.50 Book
$6.00 EAN 32 RDP
$6.00 Ean 36 RDP
$6.00 DSAT
total = 155.50
The course included 2 tanks and 2 shore dives, No Boat needed.

This was in okinawa so the cost my be differnet but I thing The PADI prices are standard.

Padi doesn't set the class prices, just the books. The Instructor or dive operation set them.

Minnesota (Metro area) is 150 - 175 for PADI 80 - 100 for SDI, including all materials.
