Could someone that has done both the TDI and the PADI Nitrox Cert give me a breakdown of the differences between the two courses and give me an idea why you would pick one over the other?

Or if someone could point me to a good thread with info already in it that would be great too....

Well, I haven't actually taken the TDI course yet, but I'm signed up for one on 6/26. I'm a PADI OW/AOW through the LDS nearest my home, but the Nitrox course is accross town. Cost is a tiny factor although it is slightly less at the shop I'm going to. The big difference is that PADI requires a dive (or two?) for the Nitrox cert while the TDI is classroom only -- no dives. With my schedule, that works out much better for me. I really don't expect to learn much from the class. I've already looked up most, if not all, of the relevant formulae and understand the physics involved (partial pressures and gas laws).

If there is someone who's done both courses, I'm just as interested as CelticRavenVA (but why would someone do a 2nd nitrox course?).

Edit: Dang! I hate it when someone sneaks a short reply in ahead of mine. ;)

Yeah I know about the dives and am ok with that, I jump at any chance I can to go diving right now. I was more curious about if there are any factors on continuing education or why some of the more experienced divers perhaps with tec experience would pick one over the other.

I took the PADI Nitrox class. They teach all the formulas and theory required to plan and execute Nitrox dives up to 40%. I was able to do 2 of my AOW dives on Nitrox for the cert so I did not have to do 2 additional dives. You do however have to plan and execute the Nitrox portion of the dives to show you can, in fact, safely plan a Nitrox dive. I'm curious as to how TDI does it, hopefully someone will come along that has taken the course to help answer your question.

what you are saying but I would be very surprised if you didn't learn some things including processes and procedures. Also - hearing other classmates ask questions will give rise to additional questions of your own...

They teach how to plan your dives based upon PO, practice using the RDP to plan nitrox dives, when to use nitrox and when not to... how and when to measure the %, etc...

I second zboss, I learned alot about how gas (O2) affects a diver, the classroom interaction was great. I now think about any Nitrox mix (in my case 21% - 32% typically, unless I go to Advanced Nitrox training) in more detail. It opened my eyes to concepts that one does not really grasp just from OW training.

Pretty much the reason I am intrested in it.... That and perhaps then I can figure out what what people are babbling about when they talk about PP02.

My original question still remains however :)

I've tried searching the board for "TDI Nitrox" and have not found any details yet on the class. If I find something I'll post it. You'll soon learn about "Partial Pressure" in class and how critical it is when diving Enriched Air. :11:
