hi guys

i have my d70 camera a few months now and i love it i get some lovely pictures above water

the housing for it is a lot of money 1200 euro for the ike, so im just wondering if i should invest the cash at all? or would i be better off to just wait it out with my fuji e900 and ikelite housing until i have the cash to buy a better dslr for underwater use

thanks guys

thanks guys ill have a look around for one

is the d70 a good camera for underwater

you should be able to get a used ikelite housing for $500-$700 USD, or a used S&S housing for the D70 for $700-$800, if you keep your eyes open.

You want to use a good lens underwater. Any dSLR can perform great UW with a good lens.

If you're going to get a macro (nikon 60mm) or WA lens (tokina 10-17mm), it would be worth housing the D70. If you were just going to use a "kit" zoom lens, I'd say maybe it's not worth it.

you will also need a port, a sync cord and a strobe, maybe $600 for a macro port, sync cord and ds-51 or S&S ys-90 strobe.

Eventually you would replace the housing and camera, but keep the same strobe and port. So you are sort of locked into the housing manufacturer. If you're concerned about costs I'd stick to Ikelite.

hope this helps

is the 18-70mm kit lens any use at all then?? because i have priced new ports for that lens at 534 euros which is a lot of cash in this climate of recession

or do u reckon i should hold out and get the 60mm lens or even the 10-17mm and buy the ports for which ever lens i get first

i wouldnt wanna waste the cash on the 18-70mm lens ports if the lens isint really the best in the first place

thanks

The 18-70 is a good lens, but underwater it's a compromise: it is not a macro lens, it does not focus very close, and it is not wide enough for wide angle.

I would go with the others you mention which are actually what I now have after having sold the 18-70. Or start with the 18-70 if you have it and get the others when you can afford them !

ive noticed that it doesnt focus close at all, i used to take pictures of my fish tank really close up to get the tiny critters but with this lens theres not a hope, it seems a bit of a waste to get the ports for this lens if the ports i buy can only be used with this lens maybe the ports will work with another lens too
