guys i have been hearing great reviews on this lens. havent gotten any lenses yet for my camera but im planning on getting this for topside action.. was wondering if this versatile lens would work well uw? thanks

This is a very handy lens for casual use topside as it is quite compact and light with a very practical zoom range for a single lens. However I would forget for UW use. Basically at 18mm end, you would need a domeport. However, when you zoom in to 200mm end, the length of the lens double so I doubt any domeport would be able to accomodate the extended length. If you use a flatport that is long enough to accomodate the 200mm lens, you won't be able to use it at the wide angle end as the port would be in the way.
The lens also does not focus close enough to make it a useful macro lens either.

The 18-200 is a great dryland lens has not come off the D200 since I got it. For underwater I have just started playing with the Nikon 17-55mm. Without a doubt this is going to become "I'm not sure what we will see" lens.

just wanted a good topside lens that i could salvage and use for uw use. the 17-55 was my first choice but way beyond my budget.

17-55mm lens is an incredible lens. I was going to get it but now that most likely Nikon will go full frame within the next 1 to 2 generation of dSLR, I am not sure that I really want to invest in another DX lens, especially the pricey one. There are still so many lenses on my wishlist that for now, I think I am going to invest in non DX lens first.

I just plucked $$$ for the D200s and housing. I don't want to even think about future full frame, 22 mega pixel cameras that will be 1/2 the size of current. AHHHHH!

when I dive somewhere new (not knowing what to expect), I put on my 60mm and carry my "Woody" diopter. I can shoot anything from macro to 67% - 75% of a shark. Easy on the pocketbook too.

The 18-200 stays on my D200 topside!
