Nikon 1 AW1 or other recommendations

I have recently got into snorkelling since discovering T&C which is the best I've seen in a safe setting lol!

We have a go pro hd which is awesome for video but I'm looking for a decent underwater still camera.

i did look at the canon d20 but it felt cheap, I'm also considering panasonic lumix, newer model but found the nikon 1 which there's not many user reviews on.

wondering if anyone here had one or could recommend a good underwater tough camera, not looking to spend more than $1000, thanks

I don't have the aw1 but do have a nikon 1 V1 which I have used snorkeling and diving using a cheap Polaroid housing. I was quite happy with the shots I got with it. The aw1 should be very similar
