Well this weekend I completed my AOW!!!!!

Speaking with my instructor after the training we discussed what would be a good next course to take. I suggest I thought maybe PP, but he said not to. He said that after watching me for the 6 dive we did he thought it unnecessary and I would gain more out of a Self Reliant course. He stated that this course would push me further into being able to resolve issues I could encounter underwater... ie make me a safer more perpared diver. With that said which agency in NE Florida offers such a course? Thanks

Is a "Self Reliant" course like the PADI Rescue Diver course I took at about the 50-dive mark? You have between 25 and 50 dives. I think Rescue at about 50 dives is a good idea. Whether you ever rescue anyone or not, it makes you a more aware and better diver, and a better buddy.

The PADI Self Reliant Diver course was pretty good. It requires, among other things, a minimum of 100 dives.

Congratulations on AOW. What three electives did you take?

What is PP? Is that Peak Performance Buoyancy? If so, it is unlikely it would not be helpful.....weighting, trim, fin kicks, relaxation, air consumption, are all fair game in the class. It kind of sounds like your instructor is not comfortable teaching it!

For him to suggest a self-reliant class is surprising; there are only two (PADI and SDI) and both require 100 dives prereq. Again, it sounds like he is inexperienced with that class.

For certification levels, Rescue is your next goal. Just do it.

For specialties, what kind of diving interests you? That is MUCH more important than what your instructor is keen to teach.

The SDI solo diver class requires a level of competency quite a bit removed from the average AOW graduate... hence the 100 logged dive prerequisite. A great long-term goal but not something to recommend as a next step.

Why not simply dive.

Also, not sure that there are any AGENCIES centered in North Florida aside from the NACD and NCC-CDS... SDI/TDI/ERDI is in Southern Florida. Do you mean SHOPS?

Congrats
I got my AOW (SSI Nitrox-deep diver-night time limited vis and perfect buoyancy ) myself on this past weekend , going to do CPR+ stress and rescue in the fall - then SDI solo when I hit a 100 dives - then go for DM next year

Thanks guys for the sound advice. I'm purely a REC diver and have no plans to go any further.... for now. As you see the AOW took me three years to get, so the Self- Reliant will be down the road a bit. I was certified through NASE and I had a very good instructor. If it takes 100 dives I may be in the class in about two years. My diving has picked up a bit this last 9 months (20 dives, current total is 36). And who knows.... I may get bored next year and take a class or spend the money on a long weekend down in Pompano.

Scottwilson1, Congradulation on the AOW. I hope you had as much fun as I did. Good Luck on your next class.

North Florida??? Go take a cavern course! You'll get your trim and buoyancy down better than just about any other course.
