I checked out my reg after an annual service and when I draw on it I get a noticeable leak. I'm leaving for Cancun in the AM, and am concerned about it diving wet.

I replaced the tie strap and no joy. How can i tell if it is a serious problem?

Reg is a Sherwood Maximus.

Thanks,

Stan

Yes and yes. If I pull a vacumn on the mouth piece, if only holds for a couple of seconds. It might not dive wet enough to spoil a dive, but then again it might.

OK first thing to find out is if the reg leaks under pressure. If you connect it to a tank, does it leak or hiss?

If that's fine, then the problem is probably either the diaphragm or the dust cap. Some dust caps don't seal well, so try putting your thumb over the yoke/din opening on the first stage while testing the reg or better yet, hook it up to a tank, pressurize it, turn the tank off, breathe the reg down, and then try the neg pressure test.

If it still leaks, then the problem is probably the diaphragm, but my guess is the dust cap since it holds pressure for a second or two. :D

With my thumb over the inlet, I still get a slow leak down. There is no sign of an outleak under pressure.

First off where is the leak? If it’s in the first stage it is supposed to leak. If it doesn’t you have a problem.

Are you trying it pressurized or just the reg by itself?

To be safe have it checked when you get there if the second stage still leaks under pressure.

Have a good trip.

Not a good symptom at all. Reg will likely breath wet or not be useable. I would not count on it. According to Oxyhacker, cracking of the plastic case is a problem with Sherwood 2nds. I would try to get a replacement befor you go on vacation tomorrow. If not, you shoud be able to rent what you need in MEX.

Enjoy & please let us know what the problem was. BTW, you did good. Many divers would not have discovered the problem until they were in the water in Cancun.

The problem with the Sherwood 2nd stages cracking was with the pre 1996 2nd stages. Not the current models.
