I read this on the front page of the Anchorage Alaska Daily News, Friday June 30.
Areas totaling 370,000 square miles, the size of Texas and Colorado combined have protected from bottom trawling. This is the largest area in the United States that is protected. These areas are in the Aleutian's and Gulf of Alaska. These areas have cold water corals that have been observed no place else.

Yes, this is a good thing. I understand that a lot of people have worked hard to make this happen. Snowbear had made me aware of it. The campaign to raise awareness that this area needs protection took several years. I am so glad it was successful. But, I learned from Snowbear that it's not only trollers which destroy the undersea habitat. She kept telling us these great stories of underwater life near Whittier, Alaska. Each time she went diving there, she discovered something new. Then, one day, everything was dead. Someone dumped their bilge. I guess people just don't realize the damage they cause. Education is so important.
