Hi everyone, I'm a newcomer to scuba diving. It's really a fantastic experience when I got my PADI certificate this year.
By the way, after I got my certificate, I went to Bali for several dives. I enjoyed most dives I had except one.
When I breathed in at the depth of 20 meters, half of them is air, and the other half is water.
It's the same after I used my partner's alternative air source. So we had to go up to the surface.
Did anyone else have the same issue? What happened?

Hello and welcome aboard.

There's nothing inherent about 20m (or 15 or 30) that would cause your reg to breathe differently.
Since you had the same issue with 2 different regs and tanks, all the mechanical possibilities are ruled out. My guess is you did something different with your mouth that was causing a poor seal. Sometimes people tense up which can cause interference from teeth or a weird jaw position . Another possibility is partial nose breathing if your mask wasn't sealing well.

Welcome! That sounds like a great start to diving, but the air issue must've been a bit nerve-wracking. Probably worth getting your gear checked out just in case.

OOf. That sounds rough. I accidentally breathed water at depth when I was doing one of the tasks in my check-out dive (full mask-off w/clear) through my nose. My sinuses hurt for several days.

As an aside, that doesn't sound normal. Like others have said, if that's your gear you were using, I'd get it looked at.

Thanks for your reply. Indeed, in that dive, I tensed up because the current was strong. I was a little frustrated because I cant make that happen again and fix the problem, and I was a little worried it would happen again and I would be in danger.

I don't have a good answer. I will suggest creating a new thread in the Basic Scuba forum with your issue. You'll get a lot more eyes on it including several instructors.
