Hello, I'm new to this sport which means I have zero experience. I have snorkeled in a few places while in the USMC. MY wife had on her bucket list to get certified in diving and that is my goal. We are going to get started on the study course come spring and head to the Keys for the real instruction somewhere around Big Pine Key. I hope to use this Forum to have a better knowledge base and help my wife through the process of learning.

Welcome. Welcome to the board AND to the world of diving.

If you have snorkelling experience, you've got a good start. Scuba diving will absolutely ruin snorkeling for you. You may pick up freediving, but that's another world from snorkeling.

The hardest thing about scuba diving (and the easiest to practice if you have a snorkel) is breathing JUST through your mouth. If your mask floods or your mask gets kicked off, you have to be able to continue breathing through your mouth. The easiest way to practice this is to submerge your face in water without a mask (or just goggles, nothing covering your nose) and breathing through it. Getting that squared away will save you a lot of time and hassle once you get to the Keys and start doing the training.
