first id like to say im a newbie at this... i just bought the g9 and the canon housing im looking at strobes and holy poop! there expensive i really want good pictures though i se all these beautiful colors and pictures. but on my old canon everything is blue and i want to get away from that big time... im looking at the sea and sea ys-110 but i think i need to go to the bank and try to get a 2nd morgage to buy it. what do you all think about the set up im trying to talk myself into?

Sea&Sea makes great strobes.

Photography is light, water eats light and external strobes are the best way to get the light you need. It's not a cheap pastime ;) but a good strobe should last for years and years and move systems with you.

There are ways to start out without a strobe and still get lovely images - manual white balance, shooting in RAW and learning how to process properly, knowing your camera and how to get the best from it etc. Many shoot with just an internal flash or manual white balance and get great images and are perfectly happy.

The reason your photos were blue is that you were too far away for any internal flash you might have had and/or for the ambient light to properly light your subject. Get closer and it will help you get the images you want.

If you haven't checked out the Sticky in the main UW Photo area (you can follow the Pink Link in my signature), pop over there as it's a great compilation of information from our members and has plenty of links to get you the information you need to get started. There are also quite a few G9 threads in the Canon forum that might be useful to cruise through.

Just to add a bit to what Kristin has said. I'm one of the guys using a G9 with the internal flash. If you are shooting in full auto mode, then that is probably the reason your shots are blue in shallow situations. Try shooting in aperture priority mode with it set to F8, that will force your flash to fire fully as the small aperture will reduce the ambient light. Also you will get a feel for how far the internal flash will carry. For large reef scenes you could also try using a red filter, instead of adjusting the white balance.

btw. Kristin, I just noticed you're a wedding photographer too. Have you done any U/W weddings in Exie?
