Hi all,
sorry for the newbie question, but I need your input. I've got a powershot A75 and was thinking of buying a casing for it to take pics during my dives...

It takes great pics above water, but will it do the job underwater? Due to light exctinction? Can the camera cope with this?

Having never taken pics diving, I don't know what to expect! I'm just looking for a camera to take good souvenir photos, and maybe closeups of particularly colorfull fish and corals... Will this camera do the job for what I want (which isn't much)? Or will the pics all come out greenish relative to what I see?

In other words, is it worth me buying the casing? Or do you need a much better camera for it to be worth it?

Thanks so much for your input!!!

I'd be interested in this answer... I've got an A75 as well. The case is $240, as much as a newer camera.

Well, I think so :) I love the A75...I'd put some shots in here, but the gallery is still glitchy.

FWIW earlier this year I had several Sunday supplements, including the front pages of said sups, use my A75 images.

It's not as fast as the new cameras, but it does just fine. I use the Canon uw housing...about $169 from b&H last time I checked.

Your photos will come out with the hue of the water unless you do one of two things:
- learn to use your manual white balance...there are numerous threads on this so have a bit of a look around, it isn't hard to do.
&
- get in close so the majority of your light comes from your flash...

of course, the "best" option is to spend more money once you have the first things down and get an external strobe. An external strobe will open up a whole new world of shooting and the strobe you buy now should move with you to the next camera you buy so choose wisely...better to spend a bit more now and have a strobe that will stay with you for years and years to come.

Hey Alcina,
are those australia report pics taken with a A75???

They're amazing if they are!!! If not, I'd love to see an example of what you can snap with it!

Thanks!!!

I think that report is with the Olympus 5050.

Here's some links to an ex-student of mine. She shoots the A85 with no external strobe or lenses. There isn't much of a difference in the two models when you get to the nitty gritty of pumping out images:

Pretty good close-ups ;)

Great land camera, nice critter shots...

And some more...

HTH

wow Alcina, those are wonderfull pics! And is exactly what I wanted to know. If my A75 is able to punch out pics like that, it will only be me holding it back! But I'd be fully satisfied with pics like that... And that answers my question!

Thanks so much for your help Alcina!

Here are some pictures from my A70 with external strobe. I think the A75 would do just as good because it is the next model.
