Hi, I live in NYC and am looking for a place to get certified. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would love to get some tips.

Welcome to Scuba Board. I can recommend the following two PADI shops I used in NYC:

1). Adventure Scuba on the upper east side, where I did my classroom knowledge and pool training for OW last year.
2). PAN AQUA Diving on West 44th or was it West 43rd St, where I got Nitrox certified this past April.

You can PM if you need more info.

I very often teach on a private/semi private basis..I have 24 hr access to a dive facility with an on site indoor heated pool and classroom..Can meet any required schedule.Located in Yonkers NY, just minutes from midtown .
Teaching since 1971..If interested pm me. or reply here.

I got certified through Panaqua and had a good time. Peter M is a great instructor, takes his time to get it right etc. That said, Panaqua follows the PADI curriculum to the letter, and in hindsight (20/20 ya' know) I would have liked some more pool training, including freediving skills etc.

I did my certification dives as referral dives in the Caribbean (nice! ;)). Many NYC shops do those dive at Dutch Spring in PA - and some - again - go strictly by the book and do 20 minute dives, which (IMO) is not nearly enough time to get comfortable and *really* get something out of it. Something to keep in mind and ask for when you choose your instructor.

There is a shop in Brooklyn (Atlantic maybe - can't find it right now) that teaches the YMCA curriculum, and from what I've read (no personal experience) that would give you a very good foundation, but also require more time to complete your training.
