A friend and I are going to be spending New Years in Mexico! We're flying into Cozumel but we're also considering taking the ferry over to Playa del Carmen. It's both of our first times in either location so we're unsure as to what will be going on. Suggestions?

If you're looking for a party, I'm sure you'll find it easily in both places.
I've never spent NY's in Coz or Playa, so can't give specific advice.

On Isla Mujeres (small island off Cancun, north of Cozumel), there is partying on the main square and all over (the very small) town with live music all night long, then everyone heads to the Eastern-most beach of the country to watch the first Mexican sunrise of the new year.

I would imagine it's kind of the same on Cozumel (dancing on the Plaza then driving to the East Side at sunrise), but you might want to ask confirmation by posting a thread in the Cozumel subforum.

Enjoy your trip !

I would suggest Playa only because the party for New Years will be a lot better. I have spent about 4 New Year's here and it is a blast every time. Tons of places to go, lots of different music, and 12th street is very fun. But this is Mexico so I am sure where ever you go for New Years it is going to be a great party.

If we're going to stay in Playa del Carmen for a couple days (3 max) and aren't planning to dive at all, where should we stay? Suggestions? We might snorkel a bit, but I think most of our plans in PDC involve topside attractions. The diving is reserved for Cozumel at this point.

I've only stayed once in Playa, so can't recommand a place.
But it would help others give you recommandations if you let us know what you are looking for :
- do you want budget / middle-range / luxury ?
- all inclusive or not ?
- on the beach or don't care ?
- in town close to the action/partying or more secluded ?

Playa offers lots of options, from cheap dorms in hostals to quiet middle-range hotels with or without pool to design boutique hotels in the party/shopping area to AI beach clubs…

You might also want to check trip advisor for a listing.
Here is another great site : Playa del Carmen - Arriving

I recommend staying in Playa del Carmen at La Rana Cansada Hotel. They are very reasonably priced and always have a HUGE New Year's Eve party. They are right in the middle of everything, so you can easily walk around to all the other bars. Playa fro sure has the best New Year's parties anywhere in the Riviera Maya, and the town is small enough you can walk from end to end without needing a taxi. However, I personally am always diving New Year's day in the morning so don't get to party too much. I hang out til the stroke of midnight, then like Cinderella, disappear. Last year we did a Bull Shark for New Year's day (here's the video from that day: YouTube - Bull Sharks diving in Playa del Carmen on New Years Day ). Our morning dives start at 9-9:30am on New Year's day, so if you'd like to join us, shoot me a PM. :)
