I just got a housing for my A70 and would like a little help. I see a weight package for sale, is this need? I also need a new compactflash, is a 512mb 12x ok?

thank you for the help,
Mike

Check out the housing manual. If you look carefully, you will find a specifications page, which will tell you approximately the weight & displacemen (from which you can figure out the buoyancy). (Alternatively, you can look at Canon's web site; check how many weights they recommend :D).

In any case, DIYing a weight set is pretty easy if you prefer. The weight set is fairly expensive. If you want to DIY, you need a 1/4-20 stainless steel screw, some stainless steel washers, and someone handy with metal snips & stainless steel sheet. (Alternatively, many stainless washers). Typical weight needed could run from 1/2 oz to 2 oz, approximately.

If I get the energy, I'll try to post a picture of a DIY weight set.

For the CF card: I don't know how many MP the A70 (did you say A70?) is, but 512 sounds like it could store > 100 pictures.

The camera is very boyant without some sort of weighting. While this can help keep the camera off the reef, it gets a bit annoying. For the cheapskate solution, go to a golf store and get some lead tape ($5). You can cut this to the proper size so it will fit inside the housing.

One step up (but still in the cheapskate category) is a homebuilt tray/handle. There are plenty of designs in the DIY section.

THe 512 card does about 300 pics. The speed doesn't seem to matter. My no name, no speed card is just as fast as the Sandisk Extreme. Must be the camera's interface.

Here's the tray a friend cobbled together out of scrap:

The handle lets you rest the camera up against the reef (good for ambient light stuff). Rings on each end for attachments.
