Hello Everyone,
My name is Josh. I recently got out of the Army and I am enjoying life as a civilian. I work for an Industrial Metal recycling company as a non-ferrous buyer. I am brand new to diving, but I already love it, and I feel I am getting addicted. I love learning about diving and listening to people who have been diving a long time.

Hello Josh and welcome to "the forum" from a South Carolinian.

As you progress in your new hobby/sport you will naturally start looking for more and more places to dive. The Carolina coastline offers some excellent diving. We don't always have beautiful days, flat water, no currents, and excellent viz, BUT we do have those conditions on occasion. What we DO have is LOTS of shipwrecks, WWll, Civil War, Merchant, Artificial Reefs, and ledges. We have three very long ledges that run parallel to the shorelines of both SC and NC. Other than sealife, you will find limestone and fossils along these ledges. Speaking of fossils, we do have some excellent black water diving in Charleston. We have the Cooper, Edisto, and Wando rivers. Flat surface, 3 foot viz, slow to fast current. Lots of fun finding artifacts and fossils from yesteryear.

Check out Beaufort, Morehead City, Wilmington, North Myrtle Beach, Murrels Inlet, and Charleston. All offer loads of diving not too far from where you are located.

Congrats on getting out of the military! I left the Army a little less than a year ago and got into SCUBA over the summer before starting law school. I'm already addicted and can't get enough.

Lee,
Thanks for the info on the Carolina coastline. I have read a few other posts from you on diving offshore in SC. It all sounds great. I look forward to more and more oppurtunities like those as I advance in my skills and experience. I love military history, especially south Carolina military history. So, to be able see and experience it first hand sounds like a dream come true. What are some good places to start as a novice diver?
Josh
