Apparently Sony released a worthy competitor to the GoPro cams: 4K Action Cam - All Action Cam Sony Store - Sony US

Specs are great - I miss though the medium and narrow FOV options, which are available in the GoPro for generations.
Besides, the stock case is not sufficient for diving, it seems to have a dome port (=issues with sharpness) and it is only rated to 10m/33'.

Are there any solutions for this? A dome lens makes sense for the FOV, however some kind of a focus compensation would also be necessary for
close focus.

The included case is rated to 10m, but Sony announced some accessories as well, among which there's a diving flat port rated to 60m. The cost was lower than GoPro's 60m dive housing. All in all, this Sony seems very compelling, and I'm curious to compare it's low light performance to that of the Hero 4

There is a diving case: Waterproof Camera Case - Underwater Camera Housing - Sony US
Unfortunately one has to buy it separately, making the choice more expensive than the gopro.

I like the increased bitrate of the Sony, wondering how will it translate to IQ.

Sony doesnt get it. A friend bought the previous model last year and took it with us on a diving trip with the standard housing (round lens). Every UW footage came out blurry and out of focus.

They had to buy a different flat lens (shown in the link above) to make it work.

Why couldnt the lens be flat already if the housing was designed to go underwater?

More money to achieve less.
