West Bay Divers in Roatan is starting a new research study on the effects nitrogen narcosis on memory ability. If anyone agrees to take part you can get 2 FREE dives in return for doing a couple of short memory tests on each dive. The dives are to a depth of 35-40m/110-130ft. Once the tests are completed on each dive participants will have about half the remaining time to look around the reef. These dives can also be counted towards a deep diver specialty and you can get some detailed information on how you personally are affected by narcosis.

There are currently 47 spots available and the study should be running until midway through the summer.

The research is conducted in collaboration with the Psychology Department at the University of Winchester in the UK.

If you are interested in taking part please contact us at: info@westbaydivers.com or check out our website for more information: http://westbaydivers.com/research-dives/

If anyone is going to Roatan and interested in doing these dives, I can highly recommend them. I had the chance to do them last year and it was a very humbling experience. I had over 200 dives at the time and had never really felt the effects of being narced even though I had been that deep or deeper on multiple occasions. I had noticed a tendency to look at my guages a little more frequently when deep but that was it. These 2 dives changed that. I don't want to give anyone an unfair advantage and describe what tests were done but lets just say that if you think you are immune to being narced, this will definitely test that theory. The whole experience was professionally done and definitely worth the cab fare from West End. To date this is still the only time I've found myself giggling hysterically at Goat fish looking for food. It was a simple dive but not one I'll soon forget.

BTW, we will be unable to run this study until after the 15th April.

Hubby and I participated in this study on April 17th and had a great time. The tasks that we were asked to perform sounded quite simple when explained to us on dry land. Not so simple underwater. If you get the chance, do it, you might be surprised at the results.

Thanks to those who took part so far - we have 10/50 so far - plenty more spaces available!
