I am looking at buying a new digital camera. My Olympus has a small LCD and think the 3 inch LCD would be great to see underwater. Has anyone use either 600 or 630? Do you like the Canon digitals?
Thanks

It's hard to go wrong with a big screen. I had the SD600/630's predecessor, the 550, with a 2.5" screen, and I think the big screen made a tremendous difference. One thing to note about the Canon SD series, however, is that while they are tiny and wonderful on land, and similarly compact underwater, they offer almost nothing in the way of manual controls, so your picture-taking will be somewhat limited to shots that the camera takes well. You'll need to learn what the camera can do, and work with that, instead of being more flexible and able to get the shot YOU wanted. That's one reason I went to the S80 (see recent threads) when my SD550 was stolen. (Note that both have the same size screen, but the S80 is a somewhat larger camera that has full manual controls.)

The SD series is GREAT on land, and you can take some GREAT underwater pictures with it as well. But if your primary goal is to take underwater pictures, you may be better served by another series. The S80 has a 2.5" screen, which is still quite luxurious in the underwater realm, while the A620 is another very popular camera with the underwater set, but it does not have a monster screen, although it's less expensive.

So if you can, tell me what you use on the S80 that would improve pixs underwater that I should consider?
Thank you for your time.
Ed

Manual controls for ISO, aperture, shutter etc. These controls affect light. And light is everything in photography.

If you have a little look around the board you will find quite a few recent threads on camera choices and why some models are favoured over others. Also check out the Getting started sticky at the top of this forum.

Check out the Fuji e900. Great for underwater. It has a 2.5 inch screen, the fastest shutter speed of any of the point and shoots, RAW format, full manual controls, 9 megapixels, fast write time and an Ikelite housing for under $300. How can you go wrong? :D

I'm suprised more folks don't talk about the Fujis here, but the e900 and f810 are both very popular over at digitaldiver.net

Perhaps SB needs a "Fuji Corner". ;)

I've heard some good things about the Fuji's, but don't much about them. Regardless, I'm a Canon guy through and through, after several misadventures with other brands.

I don't talk about it as I actually don't like my 810 all that much. Yes, it can do some nice shots, but I find it s-l-o-w to write and if you don't have the add on lenses it's average.

And I don't like the Ikelite housing for it - just too bulky and hard for small hands (though my friend with small hands DOES like hers a lot - so YMMV!).

There are also problems with both models - fringing, heating up and causing condensation, blah blah blah - that aren't talked about much. Of course, all cameras have some problems and most can be worked around. It just all depends on what you want and what you are willing to fiddle with. Unfortunately no one has made the "perfect" camera yet!

The Fuji 810 and 900 are most definitely worth taking a look at along with the Oly and the Canon models. Don't throw anything out until YOU have had a look at it yourself and determined how it will suit your needs.

Interesting about the write times. I just got my e900 a couple weeks ago and had read about the slow write times so was prepared for it. Heck, with 18meg RAW files, a bit of time is expected. I was told up to 9 seconds.

I got a couple of 1gig "type H" cards, which are supposedly faster. Well, I honestly have no problem with the write times there. It's a few seconds (3) tops by my estimation though I haven't timed it. In any event it's ready to go by the time I want to take another. It definitely could be too slow for taking lots of shots very quickly, but don't they all take some time to write RAW? And the shutter speed is out of this world. If you have it focused, you click and it takes. Instantly. Feels like a "regular" camera.

Anyway, maybe try the H cards. I have also heard formatting the card helps.

Aint it the truth! I am not a "Canon guy" or an "Oly guy" so I didn't have a predisposition toward anything. I went round and round and round with the models and they all have some drawbacks and some really standout stuff. If you're already familiar with Canons or Oly, going with one of those might be best if only for menu familiarity.

In the end, it's a tool, and one I'm not very capable with yet. I could have gotten any of the cameras I was looking at and it still would have been more camera than I have skill ;)

Cheers :D

Gregg
