Hi, my name is Beth and I am new member to ScubaBoard. I have been perusing the site for hours now and decided to join. Thanks for the enjoyment. My question is this: My husband and I are going on a royal carribean cruise and want to take a resort dive. We don't mind using the ship dive operation. We are not yet certified. We hope to be one day in the future. We noticed that most the ports of call have a scuba option. We just don't know which island to choose to do a resort dive. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on which island would be the best choice at only 30ft deep. The ports of call are: barbados, st. lucia, antiqua, st. maarten, and st. thomas. Thanks for your help.

Depending on exactly when your trip is happening I would recommend, if possible, that you do a full class before you go, and then you can enjoy a few dives as fully trained divers.

While many people have taken and enjoyed various resort programs, it is disturbing how many standards violations we hear about with regard to those programs, and the worst part is that the participants don't know enough to realize when they might be at risk.
 
My suggestion would be to do the resort dive early in your cruise itinerary. If you get hooked, you'll have additional options for resort dives while on the cruise.

Beth, when is your cruise? If it is more than a couple of months in the future you can check with a local dive shop (LDS) for an Intro to Scuba class. Generally it only takes a couple of hours and you can practice the basics of breathing underwater in a pool. That might open the door for you to get certified before you go, but if not, you'll at least be a little more familiar with the process and will enjoy the resort dive more on your cruise.

Getting certified doesn't have to take forever. For example, our LDS offers an executive course where you do the study at home ahead of time and get certified over two weekends. Depending upon the options offered by your LDS getting certified can happen pretty quickly.

If you go that route, please don't buy any gear other than mask, snorkel, and fins/booties/gloves prior to your certification. Use their rental gear until you know enough to decide what kind of diving you enjoy and what gear serves you best. If you get certified before you go, just let the cruise dive ops know you're newbies. They'll happily tailor their dives to your skill level and you can dive in more than one port of call and truly enjoy the experience of scuba.

Just something to think about. Have fun on the cruise whatever you choose to do.

It just took too much time away from his vacation. If you are just going to try it out to see if diving is something you want to pursue, a Discover Scuba dive (resort dive) will open the undersea world for less money and time.

I have never dived those sites so some else will surely give you tips on the sites.

hey welcome to scuba board. i would recommend Barbados because there are at least 3 dive shops within a mile of the cruise terminal easy to get to so u won't be late in getting back to ur ship.

As an O/W NAUI Instructor the resort courses in my opinion are not worth the money. Do your self a favor take an O/W course. Opinions vary this is mine.
