Just wondering if what everyone uses to clean a new mask. Do you use stuff from the LDS for first cleaning and defogger or is there normal household stuff that works just as well...

Phil

do you just use toothpaste by its self then rinse it out, or is it toothpaste and water then the rinse

I use toothpaste alone to wipe mask down REAL good( a couple of times) then rinse. That includes skirt, lense , everthing but the strap. Then besure to use a good defogger. If you dont like spit, I have descovered that a 50/50 solution of water and baby shampoo do the trick.

I used a non-gel toothpaste for the first cleaning and then subsequently too. I first rub the toothpaste around thoroughly using my fingers and then rinse well again using my fingers to rub around.
I use a commercial defogger or spit before a dive.

what he said.. non-gel toothpaste. I rubbed like crazy with gel toothpaste in my newest mask and rinsed and rubbed it again and the stupid thing fogged like crazy. I ended up scrubbing it again with regular paste (i used tartar control for the little scrubbies in it) and it worked great.

Regular toothpaste because of the mild abrasive. It takes the manufacturer's coating off the lense. Use your fingers to give it a good rub then rinse thoroughly to remove the toothpaste. Spit in the mask, rub until it squeaks, then rinse with a little water from the lake, river, whatever.

Good luck.

Lots of prevoius posts on this subject - might try a search an "new mask", or "mask fogs"..... Lots of divers have "secret methods", but most have good results with toothpaste, or soft scrub. Just make sure that you really SCRUB, it may help to cut the handle off of an old toothbrush to use as a mini scrubbrush. I scrub All interior surfaces 3 times, usually 1 w/soft scrub, 2 w/toothpaste, and give a try. If I have any fogging, I start over, paying particular attension to the silicone,(inside the nose pocket, ect) some masks are more of a chore than others, but you will win in the end.
Use a good commercial defoger, or plain o'l spit, as suits you, a lot of people say spit is gross, but nobody says it doesn't work.
Once you do this, your mask(little buddy) is all set, until it starts to "ness" with you, whence you start over.
Best of luck w/the mask gods!

whatever you use just don't put that mask on your forehead or YOU WILL DIE!
