Sweet...the dive shop just called to let me know that my mask, fitted with prescription lenses, is now in and ready for me to collect....hope to get there later today and pick it up that way I will at least get a chance to check it out in the local pool before I start my OW course....

Funny how little things can make your day on the run-up to doing the course!

good for you!! my husband has a prescription mask, they even put bifocal in there for one eye so he can read his guages easily. he said it came out so well, that if he lost his glasses on vacation he could actually wear that mask and be fine!! good luck with your training. we've been diving 2 1/2 years now. and i was absolutely hooked from the get go!!!!! it's just awesome! have a great time!

They work great for me though I have partial lenses (just to be able to read gauges),
bottom half of mask.I can now see for myself how much gas I have in my tank without
having to rely on my wife to tell me,I would get somewhat concerned having my wife do this at depth when she is mad at me

heliflyer - u cannot be serious!! Crikey - getting ur better half to tell you how much air left!! :D heh lol

Jon-Boi,

Just for your consideration: My wife wears her contact lenses while diving. She also did her OW cert with contacts and didn't have problems with clearing her mask. She considered getting a prescription lense, but her prescription sometimes changes too much from year to year, making it quite expensive to keep changing lenses. The salespeople in the LDS really pushed getting a prescription lense...I think it was because they made a hefty profit on it. Luckily we mentioned it to the instructor prior to buying the lenses and he told her that contacts shouldn't be a problem.

She keeps a little bottle of contact lubrication in the dive bag to use during the surface interval just to keep them from drying out.

Anyway, if you or anyone else reading the thread is able to wear contacts, it might be another alternative for you. I just didn't want anyone to be persuaded by a LDS to buy prescription lenses that they "simply had to have" when you may not have to have them.

Cheers!

Heli - u make me laugh....:D

talon - thanks for your thoughts on this. I have used contacts but it didn't really seem to work for me. The LDS was quite good - I suggested the prescription lenses and we had a chat about of I really needed them since the 33% magnification of the water can 'correct' a good deal. I guess its like everything in life, no doubt I could have gone to some other LDS and got a whole different story.

I checked out the mask in the pool the other day and I was very pleased. First time I have really seen properly under the water and that makes me feel more comfortable.

I totally agree though - its not a 'must have' but for me it was high on my list. :)

No doubt the perscription lenses are the way to go, but a cheaper alternative I have been using for a few years are the stick-in lenses that are held in by a vacum seal between the mask lense and the "stick-in". You can get various diopters and if you mainly need reading glasses they take care of the problem of clearly seeing your gages. Cost was about $30.

Good luck with your course then. I'm sure that you will enjoy it.

Newbie here. I have been planning to get prescription lenses for my mask. Just did the first confined dive using contacts this afternoon as I have not gotten the prescription lenses ordered yet. The contacts worked well, but I would have to need to have at least a gauge reader--so prescription bifocals may well be what the doctor orders-or some of those press-on magnifiers.
