Hello all. I doubt that anyone will read this, but I would like to introduce myself regardless. My name is Rob, and I'm a very friendly and laid back kid. I'm 18 years old, and a sophomore at CCNY, although I'm seriously considering transferring to Baruch. I just recently started researching diving, because the ocean is probably the most terrifying yet fascinating place on earth. Just the thought of being completely open and exposed to one of the most untapped places mother nature has to offer, and being at her mercy sobers me. I would like to get into rebreather diving, but I hear that the cost of the initial investment far exceeds that of s.c.u.b.a., so I might just have to settle. ;) No biggie. I don't know much about this amazing lifestyle, but I'm currently looking for a nearby school to get certified. I live on the border of Brooklyn and Queens, but I'm willing to travel if the instruction is worth it. In the future, I would really like to get into cave diving and wreck diving. Does anyone have any tips on how to get started? Thanks in advance to anyone who actually read this. :)

I live in NY as well but I'm a little north of you.
Im not sure about dive shops near Brooklyn and Queens but where I took my instruction was in NJ. You can do it in a weekend or you can do it twice a week for 3 weeks. I decided to go weekly since I felt that cramming it all into one weekend was too much and I wanted to be sure I absorbed it all. PM me if you want the name of the dive shop in Jersey, otherwise look in the yellow pages and maybe there is one in your area.

welcome to diving world and SB. I don't know the schools in your area, but hopefully there is somebody here who is and can help you. Maybe you can try to call Leisure Pro dive shop 888-805-3600 (located at 42 West 18th Street, New York, NY 10011), I buy all my equipment there, all the guys working there are divers too, they might be able to help you with the local schools as well.
 
Welcome to the board! Sometimes colleges have scuba programs and you even get college credit for taking them. That might be an option to explore.

Hi Rob,
Welcome to Scuba Board! We're only about 75 miles NW of you, so if you are ever in the area, drop on in. There are many Local Dive Stores (LDS) in your area. I suggest you visit as many as you can and check them out. Ask as many questions as you can and the staff/instructors should be happy to answer them to your satisfaction. Find the one(s) you feel most comfortable with and dive right in!

I live in the area. There is Village Divers in Manhattan, as well as Pan Aqua. In New Jersey there is the Hoboken Dive Center. There is also Scuba Network but they seem more expensive and carry the least variety of gear when I went in compared to the others. They are all very helpful though. If your interested in tech diving Village Diver's carries tech gear including Halcyon and Dive-Rite I believe. There are a few places in Brooklyn as well but I can't remember the names of those.
 
If i remember correctly in the PADI open water manual there was a form for college credits
