Hi all Im new to the boards getting to get my NAUI certification in July. Just wondering if anyone had tips or anything they could share before I go. I have a mask I bought fits very well says it has tempered anti-fog lens but get fogged when I swim with it any recommendation? Also what should I clean the lens with?

Plain white toothpaste. Use plenty and rub vigoriosly with your fingers all over the mask inside and out. Rinse with hot water and repeat. Then give it a coat of defog and rinse right before you dive.

no s**t toothpaste huh what about brands of equipment i currently need just about everything to start off any suggestions?

Try it out in a pool or rent it before you buy it. get familiar with the different types of equipment and their strengths and weaknesses. Evaluate how advanced you want to get and how often you will be diving.

Examples: BC: do you want a jacket style, back inflate, or BackPlate & Wings (BP/W)

Regulator(s): piston or diaphragm, doing any cold water diving?

Night diving? - dive light & backup

Ocean diving? - safety sausage and/or SMB, signaling mirror, dive knife and/or shears, storm whistle

take some time, read through the equipment forums, and remember that the best equipment isn't from a specific manufacturer, it is what suits your needs the best.

Good Luck!

Try out several types of everything while you're taking your classes. Most dive shops will let you try a reg or BCD while you're doing your pool work if they're reasonably sure that you're going to buy something from them when you find what you'd like.

Be sure, at a minimum to try a back inflate and a wrap around (jacket style?) BCD, and also look at weighting, integrated vs weight belt. Grab a couple different regs to see which you like more as well. There are some with adjustments, some without, some flashy, some not. Try as many as they'll let you try before you spend over $1000 on your gear to make sure you get something you like. Once you buy it, you're stuck with it and if it's not comfortable, you're screwed.

The Sea Gold mask defogger works great for me. Otherwise, plain ol' spit usually does the trick too!

I have only used one method. Sure, I only have about 20 dives 25 years ago, warm water, and 10 dives this year, cold water, but have always just spit in my mask and a quick rinse, but never fogged up. Can't see spending the money when I carry it with me for free.

Any king of anti-fog will work. You can also good ole spit. With any of it, rub it around and rinse it out before you dive. May want to buy a snorkel. I think all entry level courses require one. After you are certified...you may want to keep using it or not. Big debates about that. But as a new diver I think it's a must...Don't worry about any other equipment just yet. You have plenty of time before you join the throngs of us who spend massive amouts of money on things that we just have to have but probably don't need...that we may or may not like...that may or may not work...or stuff we would not trade anything for...Have fun. Mask, snorkel and fins for now...
