Hi everyone! Im new to the scuba thing but have lived hunting and fishing since I was practically born here in San Diego. This summer id like to get scuba certified from one of the local classes. I have a few questions though.

1) Is there something I should read online prior to taking the class so I know the info going in?
2) I assume there is a written test?

3) For a newb, is there some sort of gear combo's anyone offers online that's worth buying? A relative has offered to get me my own set of gear so I don't have to rent and we are wondering whats a good beginner to intermediate set up? Someone pointed me to these two links and I would like your opinion.

Welcome aboard here and hopefully to the underwater world soon!!!

Feel free to drop on down to our local forum and join in the fun here: SoCal

First of all, don't be in a hurry to buy your gear until you get an idea the kind of diving you plan to do...like warm water vacation only and/or local diving (just for starters. We have so much information here and so many opinions and options here. For starters check out: New Divers and Those Considering Diving
Also, in Diego check out my favorite dive group: Power Scuba
Hope to see you in the water one of these days (or nights). :D

hey thanks! Ill check all that out. I plan on local diving for fun and practice first then for lobster and spear fishing second and third. Water here I consider cold. Not sure what everyone else considers it.

And I totally forgot to add the links to the first posting so ill edit it as well as post them here. These are the links to a page of scuba gear sets that was recommended to me. Not sure if they are any good or not so any help appreciated.
