Well,

just got back from my Local dive shop and got goodies i feel at a great price!

Picked up,

SeaQuest Raider BCD and the shop is giving me the Full Life time warrenty with it.. Aladin Pro Dive computer ( understand its cheap and basic) but thats great for me for now till i get everything ele i need done :) and a IST BC knife for $400 canadian :)

I think it was great deal! and happy with it all.. What do you all think?

Thanks

Michael

Michael - I say this with respect dude, but do you honestly want to know what we think, or are you looking for someone to pat you on the back and say something BS and artificial like "Wow, great deal!"

Well if i wanted you to just sit there and pat me on the back and boost my ego.. i would have asked for it!

If you had read any of my previous threads you would know that i am a large guy and having serious issues getting a BC to fit right, and such.. So found this one that fits me!..

And the fact being that i bought everything and was told to go dive it and see what you think.. So the deal is not set in stone! ..

So to awnser your Question, Yes! Im asking for what you think!

Thanks

MIchael

I think, for for your size, the fact that you're intending to lose a lot of weight, and the fact you're diving in Ontario, you'd be far better off, and far happier in the long term, with a backplate and wing.

A backplate will fit anyone. If you lost 80 pounds, no problem - just adjust the webbing. It's not like there aren't a whole ton of divers in Ontario already diving the gear, so they'd be able to help you with configuration.

Okay,

Now the only thing is that many people and all the local dive shops say that that kind of set would not be somthing for me . Being new, that they all suggested picking up a good priced used unit and get use to the diving.. AS i was looking at a OMS Backplate and wing setup.. very nice it was red not sure how many they make.. But i was told that i should avoid it for now.. till i get some dives under my belt, and to the fact that it was going to cost close to 1200 for everything.. Where i paid i think the BCD was $280 for the one i got now.

There are the ups and downs, I mean i like the jacket style because of the surface floating.. its much more comfortable.. but i like the backinflate as i find diving in it its less of a struggle?

I Guess when it all comes down to it, I need to get comfortable with diving.. and the only way im going to do that is have a BCD that fits me right and this one does.. once i get a few dives under my belt and i understand more the pros and cons to the different setups, i think then i can make a decesion and then invest the money in what i will keep for life, kind of thing :)

Thanks
Michael

A) Avoid OMS like the plague.

B) $1200 for a backplate and wing set up means someone is getting raped and the other person is getting rich. VERY much so.

C) Surface floating - raises the question - what are you there for? To dive or to bob around on the surface? The whole back inflate issue is a complete non-issue. Just don't inflate your back inflate (either BC or wing) all the way.

D) There are tons, and I mean TONS of people who have been in your shoes. There are also tons of people who sit there and say "Man I wish I had bought the right gear the first time rather than waste all my time and money." You have a choice - you can be one of those people, or you can be smart.

You don't need a computer, you don't need a fancy BC knife, and I'd avoid jacket BC's like the aforementioned plague. But that's my opinion. Go get a single tank wing and backplate from Halcyon, Oxycheq or any number of other good manufacturers, it'll cost you around $700 or $800 Canadian. My dive knife cost me less than $2, made out of a modified Betty Crocker steak knife.

Hey Michael,

Congrats on taking the plunge (no pun intended)! If you haven’t noticed yet, there are as many different gear configurations as divers. Although, some divers do become a bit more vocal with training! The bottom line is you have to find a system and configuration which works beat for you and your buddy. If its fundamentals included communication, a functional configuration which you are comfortable with and is safe, then you’re on the right path.

Recently, I finally saved up enough cash to make the secure a back plate and wing configuration with a descent set of regs. Considering I have over a year to do the research, I a lot of time to assess my diving style. I am quote happy with the purchase. BTW, it was an OMS back plate with a comfort harness and bungeed wings (Oh my!) with a pair of Apeks ATX50 regs. Although, I haven’t consumed the kool-aid yet, I do like the idea of donating my OOA buddy a working reg from my mouth on a long hose.

Have fun!

Oh my it sure doesnt take long for the BP wing arguement to start up does it.
He seems very happy with his new gear so why try and plug a BP and wing
