So I want to try out my new gear in a local chlorinated public swimming pool. I'm hesitant because they're spanking new and I'm afraid they'll be damaged by the chlorine. Am I crazy for thinking this? I know many dive shops teach confined water skills in pools. Thoughts?

Rinse well. Repeat

Get it wet in fresh water first, and it'll absorb less chlorine. But don't worry. Once you go for a dive, your brand new gear won't be brand new any more. :)

You're probably safe, but if you're nervous about your investment, I'd ask to see the pool's water test logsheet (it's a mandatory document for all commercial pools). The standard level for free chlorine in commercial pools is 1-3 ppm; that low level won't harm anything if, as the previous posters suggested, you pre-rinse and post-rinse your gear in unchlorinated water.

If the free chlorine is high--say 5 ppm--then I would be moderately hesitant to swish my new gear around in the pool, but I'd not worry too much; you're only going to be in the chlorine for a relatively short time, and pre- and post-rinsing will take care of the problem.

If the free chlorine is over 7 ppm, then I'd not even dip a toe.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it unless you aren't in a position to rinse it fairly soon after you are finished. That is the approach I take for both pool and salt water - they get a good rinse as soon as possible afterwards (that might be 3 hours though given travelling times from dive sites).

Chlorine does damage gear, slowly. The effect is cumulative and takes time. Instructors who teach pool sessions see noticeable bleaching after 100s of sessions.

It does help to rinse your gear after diving.

Yes, the rinse well advice. I bought a shorty years ago from the shop that was used for OW courses in the pool for God knows how long. It's still fine for my warm water diving. Think I had to patch it once.

Thank you all for your responses! Will rinse well, before and after!

Typical diver response worried about what the chemicals will do to your gear and not your body!

Hehehe :giggle:

I'm a swimmer, so I got over that a long time ago.

Skin cells regenerate. Gear doesn't.
