Hey guys, new member here. Just saying hi.

I am from Michigan and am looking into spearfishing; however, I dont want to spend too much money on scuba gear. I have no problem looking for spear guns, but I am not sure what to get as far as the whole diving/breathing part goes. I will definitely get some good fins (I have a wetsuit with booties (just need gloves/headgear), a nice mask, a light, etc.

So here is my problem, I really do not want to by a huge scuba tank and all that other stuff. Is there anything I can get (low cost) that is small that I can just strap on to my back, put in my pocket, or just have in my mouth (not a snorkel, I intend to dive deep) that will provide me with oxygen for about 20-60min.? Sorry for the lack of not knowing how to put my search for answers into proper terminology, but I am EXTREMELY ignorant lol. Thanks a lot everyone. I look forward to your wonderful feedback. PEACE!

Warning: if you begin SCUBA diving and see the wondrous, beautiful marine life that God has created, you may choose to take photos instead of killing and wounding.

that is another thing to consider for myself; however, I intend to eat my catch (even crayfish) Thanks for the input.

Maybe you should register in a scuba course and learn to dive before thinking about spearfishing. Diving is a very dangerous sport, just check the Accidents Board. Inexperienced divers are at risk more than experienced divers, especially if you start clouding your mind and wasting your energy on extra tasks like spearfishing.

You could freedive to spearfish. If this is a question of breathhold technique, there are lots of people who say the Performance Freediving clinics are amazing.

Sure, if you want to go real cheap, a bit of bacon tied to a string hanging in a ditch would net you some crawfish...

Bottom line, spearfishing in the U.S. will _most_likely_ be more expensive than buying the same amount of the same fish at your local supermarket. At least here in Texas...

Or he may enjoy shooting fish in the head. I do.

If you're going to spear on scuba, you really need to learn scuba first. The taskloading added when spearing is too much for a beginning diver, IMO. If you don't want to do that, you can work on freediving while spearing.

Come to Oklahoma and try your hand at noodling... Spears not needed

I agree....on all points. Going from beginning diving to scuba spearfishing is a big step and one's dive skills need to be honed first.
