Ranger is $900 list, $750 on sale at scubatoys. Eclipse is $799 and Infinity is $899, very rarely on sale. So no, it's isn't that big a gap.

The Aqualung Dimension i3 I bought cost more that a new Infinity. It certainly cost a lot more money given that I bought both the Dimension two years ago and an infinity at $500 on Ebay last week...

I can't imagine spending that much for a BC,,,

get this instead... If you don't like it you can sell for little or no loss..

There are lots of threads on this. The most recent one I can find is this:
http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/bu...ery-confused-bp-w-requesting-help-newbie.html

But poke around though the first 4 pages of topics and you'll see about 4 different long threads where people talk about the various options. A lot of the people who commented on those threads know a lot more than me about the various options, so you should read through those threads.

I like the way he used the die on the lower exhaust. ;)

Of course you're going to want to re-thread the waist buckle correctly.

He was SO close, just missed the last one.....

Missed that. :blind:

Alas, conditionally sold at the moment.

To the original question:

Dan's Dive Shop also sells the BP/W style BCD.
They might have a few in stock for you to look at.

The Deep Sea Supply and HOG models are more economical and just as good as the higher price "name" brand models that they also carry.
No use paying the Halcyon "H" tax.

As mentioned, easily upgradable with a larger wing for back mounted double tanks for tech diving.
You can switch the backplate to Aluminum or Plastic for travel weight savings.

I even learned to sidemount with an adaptor plate on my BP/W.

Easier to fix than a jacket style BCD, parts are modular.

My bp/w is DSS i have changed the wing out for a oxycheq 30-32# the reason is that you can change the bladder yourlself. I have ruptured 3 dss wings. Its not the wing fault it was the way i was handling them. wings pinched between tanks in back of suv. The dss will give all the lift that it was designed for but the oxycheq was a narrow wing and can not inflate fully because of the 8" tank it houses so a 30# min is needed. also another draw back on the DSS for me was the inflator hose for me attached centered on the wing and not on the left shoulder. As result i have more hose to grab and less between the back of my neck and the tankvalve / regulator.

You can get a complete DSS rig with stainless steel plate, brand new, for $470, direct from DSS.

Things I like about my DSS BP/W:

- The way the wing is designed, you can remove/replace it without undoing any nuts/bolts and without unthreading the cam strap buckles. On and off in about 10 seconds or less. And when it's on, it is secure.

- You don't need to buy/use a Single Tank Adapter (STA).

- The Low Pressure Inflator hose is shorter than most BCDs have. At first, I was concerned about this. Now, I like it better than what I was used to because it's still long enough to use with no problems and the shorter length means I don't have "extra" draped down the front of my chest in the way of, say, access to stuff clipped to my left shoulder strap.

Also, if KWS's post concerns you, you can buy the DSS LCD wing, instead of a Torus wing, and those will allow you to replace the bladder if necessary. I bought my LCD used. It is 10 years old, still with the original bladder in good shape.

Last point: Unlike many things in life, with wings bigger is not better. You really want a wing that is just big enough to meet your needs. If you only need 30# of lift, then you don't really want a 40# wing. For me, for warm water diving using a SS BP, DSS recommends a 17# wing. What I actually have is a 30# wing and that means I'm just dragging around a big bunch of wing material through the water that I don't need to be. I got it used, so I can't complain too much, but anyway...

For cold water, all other things being equal, you'll need a wing with more lift. That is because cold water means you'll wear a thicker wetsuit, which is more buoyant. More buoyant means you'll wear more weight in order to sink it from the surface. But, at depth, the wetsuit will compress and you'll lose a lot of that buoyancy. So, at depth, you'll need more lift from your wing in order to overcome the weight of the extra lead you're wearing.

Unfortunately, that means that if you're living within a budget, you'll want to buy a wing big enough to use for your cold water diving up north, and then just deal with the extra "baggage" when you go tropical - like I do. But, the beauty of the BP/W setup is you can buy your cold water wing now, then get a wing for warm water use later and easily swap back and forth depending on where you're diving, without having to have two complete separate rigs. Likewise for when you eventually go to double tanks. Swap wings and the BP and harness stay the same and you're good to go.

Nothing wrong with Halcyon, or Dans. Their built to last.

My singles setup isn't Halcyon, but does have halcyon components - inflator hose/valve, weight pockets. A plate pretty much is a plate, same with wings.

Some may offer fancy features, may/may not require a STA. my setup doesn't require one, but it's friggin hard to use without one. Even on shore, let alone a rocking dive boat with everything loose until you do up the straps, then the wing is pinched, in the wrong spot, buckles come undone before they're used etc.

If your concerned on space with travel and a STA, bolt the wing to the plate so it doesn't move around as you wrestle the plate on tanks (and burn a hole/grommet the straps so they stay in place through the bolt).

My doubles wing is a used Halcyon (about a good 10years on it before I took ownership). Still is in great shape, very little wear/year except for the manufacture tag is fading and fraying a little bit. There's an ID number in silver sharpie on it, but still it's held it's value, and will still hold its value if I ever get rid of it.

Some things that Halcyon makes are frivolous, like the cinch system, but, with a little modification, it's a great asset if you don't have the mobility in your shoulders, but then you shouldn't be diving doubles at that point (reaching valves for flow checks/shutdowns).

I'm not a Halcyon fan boy like some many out there, nor a DSS/Holis/Dive Rite/etc, just a happy customer of what I do have with that 'expensive blue H' and the other H's that are out there (or whatever the brand may be)..
