I just came back from a week of diving down in Key Largo...good all around week of diving considering it was mostly shallow reef diving on cattle boats. The Speigel Grove topped the list.

What brings on my thread is the basic need for Dive Boat Etiquette...good manners, consideration for the circumstances...helping others...good entry and exit skills...good anchor line etiquette and consideration...the list goes on and on.

Am I complaining? Yes, I am...but others have made the same observations and have come to the same conclusions.

How about it PADI, NAUI, SSI and others? How about an extra level (on top of all the other levels) of Diving Etiquette and certification...or am I asking too much?

Comments?

Certification in dive etiquette? Please no....!!

Aren't you asking for folks to be aware of others, act nice, etc.? Isn't that something you are taught growing up?

As for entry/exit skills etc., it would seem that you get better as you practice, and many divers "practice" once a year....

Good manners are taught at home:

Maybe you should carry a copy of "Etiquette for Dummies" and leave it lying around.

http://www.etiquettesurvival.com/products1.htm#1

Or maybe you can write the next best seller in the series "Diving Etiquette for Dummies", how to behave in caves, on boats and on the beach.
I'm pretty sure if you started a thread here asking for suggestions you'd get enough to fill a book.

Now as for expecting PADI et al to improve this... ;)

Pointless idea. It would take 10 mins during a qualification course to explain boat procedures. Thats not a certification.

You will end up with people having no manners and/or common sense causing havoc but no bit of paper will change that.

(are all key largo boats really cattle operations? Im there next june!)

I am half joking in my request and I most certainly agree with you regarding experience etc. The problem I see is the same problem I see driving on the busy roads...everybody for themselves and not being considerate of others. We live in a hyper active age where everyone wants it yesterday in both ways...I still believe that good manners count...then again, I might be accused of being an idealist.

I was half joking regarding setting up another certification. I also have to agree that any book or paper would be pointless for the throng of tourist divers.

Funny thing...in our age of drive through satisfaction...there actually might be some return on a book entitled: Diving Etiquette for Dummies.

No...not all Key Largo boats are cattle operations...you have to shop around for what you want. I dove with Sea Dwellers...and they are a pretty good outfit...but, mostly cater to the new crowd, shallow reef diving...and on some days...they packed the boat up to capacity.

PADI, NAUI and SSI all have a Boat Diver specialty course. The PADI course specifically includes:
*Boat diving planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards
*Proper boat diving etiquette, including equipment storage and conduct
*Common boat terminology
*Specific and local boat diving laws and ordinances
*Overview of emergency and safety equipment needed on- private dive boats

It's available, you just need people to take it.

Marc:

Thank you for the update. I am aware of the information and related readings, terminology etc. I was just having some fun with the idea...unfortunately, the training escapes some divers.

I now in my 2 week NAUI course that we will be going over some Dive boat etiquette. They said that it is things that they had to learn the hard way, and that they would like us to know a little bit about. I figure if I ever do go on a dive boat that they will come in handy. Although a certification in it? Not sure.... I figure generally being polite, helping others when/if possible, and other things that we should practice not only dive boats but in real life should be suffecient.
